Hawkswood House in Fife is much more than a luxury holiday property — it stands as a symbol of transformation, family devotion, and long-term vision.
Nestled near Peat Inn, about seven miles from St Andrews, Hawkswood House was the first part of what has grown to become Hawkswood Country Estate.
The journey started 2006, when Jo-Anne Ainscough discovered the plot which comprised two derelict buildings — Hawkswood House itself, and The Roundel. Originally used as dog kennels and stables, both structures had fallen into severe disrepair.
But it was easy to see the potential of the buildings, and we agreed to buy them in February 2006.
The planning process meant it was around a year before restoration could begin in earnest.
Renovation commenced in January 2007.
Many of the internal walls were demolished — more than we would have liked. These were later painstakingly rebuilt. Hawkswood House was also extended at both ends by more than ten metres in total. The family completed its restoration in late 2009.
Originally envisioned as a private home, Hawkswood House was later adapted into a luxury self-catering holiday property.
We opened for guests in 2014. As a family business, decorating and further refurbishment fell to Mary-Jo Ainscough, daughter of John and Jo-Anne.
Part of what makes Hawkswood House Fife special is not just the houses themselves but the amenities and setting.
The estate includes its own short-game golf practice area and driving range. Guests looking to play golf at the many famous courses in Fife — including the links around St Andrews — find Hawkswood an ideal base.
In fact, Nick Faldo used Hawkswood House as a base for the 2015 Open at St Andrews, his last appearance at the tournament he won three times.
After a day on the course, whether you are a legendary pro or an enthusiastic amateur, you can relax in the private hydro spa and take in the stunning views from Hawkswood House.
