Enjoy a Luxury Autumn Break | Hawkswood Country Estate
Autumn Break Guide · Hawkswood Country Estate

Enjoy a Luxury Autumn Break

There's a case for visiting Fife whatever the season, and Autumn is a particular favourite. The countryside around Hawkswood Country Estate turns gold and copper, the light softens, and the crowds that fill St Andrews all summer have gone home. Golf rounds get quieter too, and noticeably cheaper. Hawkswood Country Estate, a five-star private estate near St Andrews, is the ideal place to spend the season properly.

Why Autumn Is the Season to Visit Fife

Fife in October is mild rather than warm, with daytime temperatures typically sitting around 14°C and clear, crisp mornings that are made for a walk before breakfast. It's a gentler climate than most visitors expect from Scotland, and one that suits long lunches on a terrace, a round of golf without the summer haze, or simply sitting outside with a coffee and watching the light change over the estate.

As the season moves into November, the days turn colder and shorter, closer to 11°C, and the countryside takes on a different, quieter character. Either end of autumn has its own appeal: golden colour and mild days early on, and long evenings by the fire as the season deepens.

Autumn also means fewer visitors across St Andrews and the East Neuk, so restaurants, distilleries and golf courses are calmer and easier to book at short notice than in the height of summer.

Signs of autumn on the estate

  • Golden grounds. The trees and hedgerows across the estate's 37 acres turn gold, copper and rust through October.
  • Misty mornings. A soft mist often sits over the driving range and short-game areas at dawn, burning off by mid-morning.
  • Longer evenings inside. Wood-burning fireplaces and private hydro spas come into their own as the evenings draw in.
  • Migrating birds. Geese pass over the Fife coastline on their autumn migration, a common sight from the estate grounds.
02

The View From Your Window

Each property on the estate looks out over the Fife countryside in a different way, and autumn is when those views are at their best.

Hawkswood House

The Terrace & Balcony

Hawkswood House's outdoor terrace and balcony look directly over the grounds, the perfect spot for a morning coffee as the mist lifts, or a glass of something warming once the sun goes down and the colours turn to silhouette.

The Roundel

Panoramic Dining Views

The Roundel's dining area is built around panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, so the whole group can watch the autumn light move across the grounds over breakfast, lunch and dinner without leaving the table.

Bowhill House

The Outdoor Terrace

Bowhill House's own dining terrace catches the last of the afternoon light, a good spot to sit out for as long as the weather allows before moving inside to the wood burner and pool table.

Same Courses, Lower Green Fees

Golf in Fife doesn't stop when summer ends, and for a lot of golfers, autumn is the better time to play. Courses are quieter, the ballot for the Old Course is less oversubscribed, and green fees drop noticeably once the peak summer season ends.

St Andrews Links Trust moves to a shoulder season price list around the middle of October, with green fees typically around a third lower than the summer peak. From the start of November, winter rates apply across the Links Trust courses and much of the rest of Fife, bringing costs down further still. Exact pricing changes year to year, so it's worth confirming current rates with the golf concierge when you book.

Fife's golf seasons, roughly

  • SummerPeak rates, busiest ballot
  • Mid-October to 1 NovemberShoulder season, around a third less
  • 1 November to 31 MarchWinter rates, the lowest of the year

Rates are set independently by each course and change annually. Ask the Hawkswood golf concierge for current pricing when planning your trip.

Cosy Evenings on the Estate

As the days shorten, the estate is built for the evenings that follow a day outdoors. Every property has its own private hydrospa in the garden, warm enough for an autumn soak under the stars, and a wood-burning fireplace for afterwards. Bowhill House's full-size pool table is a reliable way to fill a dark evening, and a private chef from Hawkswood's approved network can cook for your group, with menus built around autumn produce such as game, root vegetables and the season's seafood from the Fife coast.
